Admissions

Admissions:  How to Apply

There are three minimum requirements before an applicant can be considered for admission to the transatlantic Ph.D. program. First, applicants are expected to have earned a M.A. degree. Secondly, at least one of the previous academic degrees (either B.A. or M.A.) has to be in history. Thirdly, the applicant must have a graduate GPA of 3.5, a GRE verbal score of at least 550 and an analytical writing score of at least 5 on the GRE aptitude test. If the student fulfills these requirements, he/she can submit an application to the Graduate School and the Department of History at the University of Texas at Arlington (UTA).

The application is two-step process. Students are encouraged to apply online to the Graduate School at UTA. Please go to https://www.applytexas.org/adappc/commonapp.WBX to apply online. In addition, applicants need to send a letter of intent, a writing sample (e.g., research essay, thesis chapter), and three letters of recommendation on his/her behalf directly to the Ph.D. Graduate Advisor in the History Department. Please send these documents to:

If the student applies for financial aid and fellowships, the application has to be submitted before February 1. The admissions committee meets to evaluate applications in the first two weeks of March. The committee accepts applications only for admission beginning with the fall semester of the academic year. Students who want to be considered for admission need to submit their application by June 1. Afterwards the admissions committee might not be able to consider applications for admission..

The admissions committee can grant unconditional admission, provisional admission, or probationary admission. An applicant unable to supply all required documentation (e.g., official transcripts or GRE scores) prior to the admission deadline but who otherwise appears to meet admission requirements may be granted provisional admission. Provisionally admitted students must provide any incomplete documentation by the end of the semester in which they are admitted. If the applicant fails to do so, the Department may then reclassify the applicant as Probationary, defer the decision, or ask the candidate to leave the program. An applicant whose performance, according to the criteria, approximates but does not meet minimum admission standards may be granted Probationary Admission subject to the condition that the candidate must earn no grade lower than a B in his/her first 12 semester hours of graduate work taken at UTA.

The admission committee will defer or deny an application if two or more of the criteria have not been met satisfactorily. A deferred decision may be granted when a file is incomplete or when a denied decision is not appropriate.
