Duties consisted of directing and supervising the operations and
administration of the Special Collections Division, including the
identification, acquisition, processing, and preservation of materials;
reference and user services; outreach, fund raising, and public relations; and
serving as liaison with the Friends of the UTA Libraries, a library support
organization with 350 members. Special
Collections houses 40,000 volumes, 7,500 rare maps, 7,000 linear feet of
manuscript and archival collections, and approximately 3.2 million
photographic prints and negatives. The
division's holdings focus on Texas, Mexico, the American Southwest, the U.S.
War with Mexico, and the cartographic history of the Gulf of Mexico.
The division has a full-time staff of ten, evenly divided between
professional and classified staff, and employs eight work-study students each
semester. In addition, the
permanent and student staff are assisted by volunteers and student interns
pursuing graduate education in archival science.
