Honors Study Abroad at Home : New York City, Spring 2014

Theater and New York
HONR-VP 2303 or THEA 4304
Dr. Dennis Maher, Department of Theatre Arts

UPDATED: 2014-Jan-06: The trip over Spring Break has been cancelled, but the course is still open.

This new course will examine the substantial contribution New York theater has made to the arts and culture of America and the world. A unique component of the course is a five-day trip to the Big Apple during spring break. Students will walk the Theater District extensively and will see at least three Broadway and Off-Broadway plays, including classic revivals and cutting-edge new productions; and several theaters will be visited for behind-the-scenes looks at production. Tentative plans are for the class to see Newsies and Kinky Boots & Matilda, and possibly productions featuring Denzel Washington (A Raisin in the Sun) and Hugh Jackman (Houdini). The estimated cost of the trip is $2000 per person, which includes airfare and hotel. All enrolled students will receive $500 (in the form of a scholarship) to defray costs. Admission is by application; a form will be posted to the Honors College website by mid-November. Applicants will be interviewed as their applications are received. Enrollment for the course is limited to 12, so early application is strongly advised.

The course is open to all UT Arlington undergraduates and requires no previous knowledge of theater or New York. HONR-VP 2303 can be used to satisfy the Core requirement in Visual and Performing Arts, or can serve as a Liberal Arts elective. Prof. Maher will schedule information sessions on the course in November.
