HONR 4303-001 course added. (2013-Apr-15)

Honors (cross-listed)
HONR 4303-001:
(Arditi) Popular Music Studies [MTWR 100-300P - 5wk1] (INTS 4388-001)
Course Description:
• Why does it matter if Beyoncé lip-syncs the National Anthem?
• How are the Billboard charts determined?
• Who cares what the Dixie Chicks have to say?
• What makes a song popular?

If questions like these interest you, sign-up for Popular Music Studies (INTS 4388-001) this summer. Love it or hate it, popular music is deeply imbedded in our culture. This course places popular music within a broader cultural, historical, social, musical, economic, and political context to understand the consequences of popular music.

Major Class Assignment: the class will collectively run a music website. Some students will blog (write concert reviews, album reviews, or write about their favorite indie bands) for the website, while other students will maintain the website and update its database.

HONR-LA 1301-001:
(Chiarello) Confronting Boundaries [MW 300-420P]
Course Description: Texts by marginalized authors often challenge the boundaries which prevent access to the mainstream. If, indeed, the pen is mightier than the sword, analyzing these works will allow us to see just what rhetorical strategies give words their power. Students will learn how to write their own effective arguments as they respond to the required works, which will include visual images and at least one movie, as well as articles from sociology, cultural studies, gender studies, and postcolonial discourse. By the end of the semester, students should be able to assess just how–and how well–a given work of literature resists those American ideologies that deny privilege to certain groups. They should also be able to read, write and think critically about any subject of their choice.
