Honors College Mission Statement

The Honors College of the University of Texas at Arlington is a purposefully diverse community of student scholars in all majors dedicated to accomplishment in academics, creative activity, research and service. Through its sponsorship of co-curricular lectures and symposia, the College cultivates intellectual curiosity and serves as a resource that brings to the attention of the wider University community topics and issues of both timely and timeless significance. Outreach programs sponsored by the Honors College serve high-achieving high school students as well as teachers in the region.

In addition to following a rigorous academic curriculum, all Honors students complete a capstone senior project. All senior projects involve a sustained research program developed in consultation with, and carried out under the mentorship of, research-active faculty. The approaches, methodologies and end products of the projects are enormously varied, in accordance with models and traditions in the many academic disciplines represented in the University. The senior project (the results of which are presented publicly) simultaneously draws an end to the Honors experience and looks past the undergraduate years by inculcating habits of inquiry and critical thinking that prepare students well for graduate or professional school and the world of work.

The Honors College is also committed to the development of citizen-scholars. Honors students are encouraged to participate in community service and to seek leadership opportunities within the larger University. Moreover, professing the view that travel is a parallel education, the College takes seriously its obligation to enlarge students' understanding of the world. To that end the College offers highly respected study abroad programs that provide opportunities to engage with the people, events, movements, ideas and products of cultures other than their own; to link historical events and developments with those of the twenty-first century; and to understand the contributions of other peoples and regions to American culture and institutions.
