The Dennis Boe Award (Updated: 2011-Jan-21)
This guide will assist you with the steps required to submit a paper for consideration by the Boe Award Committee. If you have any further questions, please contact us at GPHC2011@uta.edu.
The Great Plains Honors Council sponsors the Dennis Boe Award to showcase and reward outstanding scholarly work by undergraduate honors program/college students of its member institutions. The entry deadline is January 28, 2011. Winners will be recognized on April 1, 2011 at the annual conference in Arlington. This is a merit-based, competitive award. If you are interested in submitting for a Boe Award, please read the following instructions carefully:
- Scholarly papers describing research or creative activity from honors students in any academic field can be submitted for consideration. These are individual awards; team/group and multi-authored projects cannot be considered.
- All submissions must come through the Honors Director/Coordinator/Dean of a dues-paid member institution, since GPHC dues make this award possible. Each institution is allowed to endorse up to two entries.
- Up to four $200 cash awards, and accompanying plaques, will be awarded to student winners who have no more than sixty earned hours at the time of the conference.
- Up to four $200 cash awards, and accompanying plaques, will be awarded to student winners who have 61 or more earned hours and have not yet graduated at the time of the conference.
- Papers not selected as Boe winners will automatically be considered for regular presentation slots at the conference; there is no need to write one abstract for the contest and another for the program. Proposals may be submitted online.
- Boe Award papers must be submitted electronically to GPHC2011@UTA.EDU with BOE SUBMISSION in the subject line. They must be in one of the following file formats: Microsoft Word (which does not include Microsoft Works), OpenOffice, Adobe PDF, or Rich Text Format. The file must contain all elements of the paper (e.g., images). If a file cannot be opened, the owner will be contacted by email and instructed to resubmit.
- The paper must be no longer than 20 double-spaced pages and must follow standards and forms for its discipline.
- The submission must include a cover sheet with the following information: student's name, student's email address, school, name of his/her Honors Director/Coordinator/Dean, Honors Director/Coordinator/Dean's email address, and the number of credit hours the student has completed. The pages of the paper itself should not bear the name or institution of the student to ensure anonymity in the judging.
- The final electronic submission must be received by 5:00 pm, January 28, 2011.
- All Boe winners will do an informal oral summary of their research after dinner on Friday, April 1. Each presentation will be no more than five minutes in length; no PowerPoint or other audio-visual equipment will be permitted.
- All Boe winners will give 15-minute formal presentations on their research on Saturday, April 2. The Boe winners will be scheduled in a plenary format (so that no other presentations compete).
- The papers will be judged in blind readings by three faculty members from different disciplines and institutions whose students have not submitted papers for the Boe award. The judges will be appointed by the president-elect of the GPHC.
- The judges may elect not to award all prizes if they determine fewer papers meet the required standards for quality.
- An institution with a winning student or students is eligible to apply for one $500 travel grant the following year to be used for travel to either the NCHC or GPHC conferences. The number of awards may be limited by budget, with priority given to the greatest need among those eligible.

This award honors the late Dr. Dennis Boe, Director of Honors at East Central Oklahoma State University. The untimely death of Dr. Boe robbed the NCHC and GPHC of a long-time leader, scholar, musician, poet, and good friend.
