PURPOSE: To provide paraprofessional support to the mental health providers in an out-patient university mental health department. Act in an intermediary capacity between the mental health providers and the mental health clients. Provide client screening, coordination of care and clerical assistance for the department. Responsible for providing clinical and clerical support to the mental health providers. Assist with screening of urgent care appointment requests and provide crisis support for individuals waiting for a mental health provider. Coordinate routine requests and urgent access to the mental health providers.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Screen phone calls requiring medical/mental health expertise. Refer calls to appropriate provider. Respond to client questions on medications; assist with refills. Reschedule appointments as required. Place appointment reminder calls to patients. Assist with patients in crisis while awaiting provider, law enforcement, or support person to arrive. Provide emotional support to patients in waiting area. Check-in psychiatry patients, take vitals and weights, take patient photo for psychiatric record. Provide assistance with psychiatric records: initiate and maintain records, pull records for appointments, send for records from previous providers and send out records for continuity of care. Assist with annual record retirement process. Assist with patient assistance medications applications and medication pre-authorizations for insurance. Assist psychology with patient testing as required. Assist with campus educational or screening programs related to Mental Health topics. Assist with annual rotation of psychology and psychiatry records from active to inactive and inactive to destruction.

REQUIRED EDUCATION: $education
REQUIRED EDUCATION-OTHER: Associate's degree as a psychiatric technician or college equivalent or graduation from a vocational training program or military training as a psychiatric technician*.* Training is usually a two year program focusing on mental health illnesses, psychotropic medications and communication with mental health clients.
