PURPOSE: Works under limited supervisions to provide professional and supervisory skills involving practice of medical and psychiatric social case work in clinic, hospital, or medical project. Function as line supervisor to plan, coordinate, and supervise work of professional and paraprofessional social workers and case aides of lower grade.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Makes work assignments; reviews work for professional quality, completeness, and adherence to established policies. Provides guidance to subordinates in resolution of work problems. Establishes procedures for, and supervises preparation of case histories, clinic charts, and other various reports and records. Ensures maintenance of high professional standards. Conducts and participates in staff conferences and meetings. Functions as staff supervisor to serve as advisor or consultant to director of project in development of goals and objectives of overall social work program for implementation by social work personnel assigned to health teams. Develops and conducts in-service training programs for social work personnel. Interprets psycho-social and environmental factors of individual cases to health team medical personnel. Develops recruitment standards and, interviews social work applicants, and recommends employment of best qualifies applicants. Performs other duties as assigned.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS: SUPERVISION: N/A SUPERVISION-OTHER: Students, professional or paraprofessional social case workers of lower grade as directed.


REQUIRED EDUCATION-OTHER: Master's degree from approved school of social work, sociology, or psychology or related field.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE / COMPETENCIES-OTHER: REQUIRED EXPERIENCES/COMPETENCIES: Five (5) years experience in medical and/or psychiatric social case work to include one (1) year as Social Worker III or equivalent. Licensure as LMSW, LPC or LCDC. OTHER REQUIREMENTS: Proficiency in all phases of duties performed. Work requires exercise of considerable judgment in interpretation of policies and application of procedures, techniques, and practices to work problems. Work requires personal contact with community social service agencies or patients and their families in resolution of problems of non-routine, non-recurring nature. Work is performed primarily in private office or clinical care area. Specific job requirements or physical location of positions allocated to this classification render the position security sensitive and thereby subject to the provisions of Section 51.215 Texas Education Code.
