PURPOSE: To provide skilled technical assistance in a medical/research laboratory. Responsible for assisting laboratory technologists in effectively carrying out medical and scientific tests.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Performs standard laboratory experiments. Prepares laboratory specimens. Assembles and operates laboratory and field equipment. Weighs and assists in procedures with experimental animals. Collects and records data and performs mathematical tasks involved in summarizing results of experiments may include statistical, numerical or multi-variant analysis, operation of calculator or adding machine and related clerical functions. Prepares chemical compounds, reagents and culture media. Prepares and specializes bacteriological culture media which may require somewhat refined techniques for use in teaching and research. Develops, prints and enlarges film data. Prepares anesthetic agents and induces anesthesia to animals. Performs related duties as required.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS: REPORTS TO: Usually specific instructions received on all new projects or procedures. General supervision received on the more routine duties. SUPERVISION: N/A SUPERVISION-OTHER: May assist in the training of new work-study or non-regular employees.

REQUIRED EDUCATION: $education

REQUIRED EDUCATION-OTHER: High school graduation or equivalent.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE / COMPETENCIES-OTHER: REQUIRED EXPERIENCES/COMPETENCIES: Six months of experience in laboratory work. OTHER REQUIREMENTS: Knowledge or previous experience with the various types of equipment and materials used in the employing laboratory. Extreme accuracy in the preparation of materials and specimens and the recording of research data. Usual laboratory conditions. May work with hazardous materials. Specific job requirements or physical location of positions allocated to this classification render the position security sensitive and thereby subject to the provisions of Section 51.215 Texas Education Code.
