PURPOSE: To perform highly skilled and technical work in the construction, operation, repair and maintenance of specialized equipment related to scientific research or other similar activity. Responsible for supervising skilled and semi-skilled student workers in student shops, and personally participates in technical work of a highly specialized or non-standard nature.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Designs, plans, lays out, constructs and inspects work of subordinates in construction or major repair of specialized electrical, theater or mechanical apparatus. Instructs subordinates and students in shop techniques and working procedures. Rewinds meter movements. Removes, tests and replaces resistors, condensers and other meter or instrument parts. Orders supplies and equipment needed for work. Performs related duties as required. Performs other skilled work as required.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS: REPORTS TO: General instructions less specific in nature than those given to Technical Staff Assistant II. SUPERVISION: N/A SUPERVISION-OTHER: In some instances such as student shop location, supervision and instructions will be given.

REQUIRED EDUCATION: $education

REQUIRED EDUCATION-OTHER: High school graduation or equivalent.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE / COMPETENCIES-OTHER: REQUIRED EXPERIENCES/COMPETENCIES: Two to three years of experience in the skilled construction and maintenance of equipment or apparatus of the type related to the position. OTHER REQUIREMENTS: Proficiency in all phases of the duties performed. Specific job requirements or physical location of positions allocated to this classification render the position security sensitive and thereby subject to the provisions of Section 51.215 Texas Education Code.
