PURPOSE: To provide basic skills in the maintenance and repair of automotive and grounds maintenance equipment. Responsible for performing maintenance and minor repair of automobiles, trucks, tractors grounds equipment, and emergency generators.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Performs light general repairs on vehicles, trucks, tractors, and grounds maintenance equipment. Prepares vehicles for state inspection, and performs "make ready" procedures for motor pool vans. Performs scheduled vehicle preventive maintenance work to include the maintenance of radiators, batteries, drive belts, steering boxes, filters, brakes, transmissions, rear ends, tires, lights, mirrors, performs oil changes and grease jobs. Also responsible for updating vehicle maintenance records, maintained in Automotive Shop. Other duties include; obtaining gas pumps readings, light repairs to gas pumps, tire repairs/replacements, run errands for parts, and assist with cleaning the shop area.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS: REPORTS TO: General supervision with occasional specific instructions from the Automotive Shop Supervisor. SUPERVISION: N/A SUPERVISION-OTHER: None.

REQUIRED EDUCATION-OTHER: High School Graduation.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE / COMPETENCIES-OTHER: REQUIRED EXPERIENCES/COMPETENCIES: One year experience in basic automotive maintenance and repair. Valid Texas drivers license required. OTHER REQUIREMENTS: Ability to operate machines and equipment used in the automotive mechanic trade Ability to perform all tasks with extreme accuracy. Working conditions are considered acceptable, but occasionally involve exposure to mechanical hazards and outside weather conditions. Alertness and careful attention is required to avoid injury to self and others. Specific job requirements or physical location of some positions allocated to this classification may render the position security sensitive, and thereby subject to the provisions of section 51.215 Texas Education Code.
