PURPOSE: To direct the painting and decorating of the interior and exterior of buildings, equipment, machinery and furniture. Responsible for planning and supervising painters and for maintaining records of the department.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Plans, coordinates and supervises painters and helpers, assigning them to specific jobs, instructing them in the work to be performed and inspecting work, both in process and at completion, for quality and compliance with the work orders.  Makes inspections of the various facilities at the University to determine the need for painting, caulking, or plastering and reports his findings and recommendations.  Makes cost estimates of jobs in terms of time and materials.  Performs related duties as required.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS: REPORTS TO: Minimal supervision after review of operational effectiveness with specific instructions from the Superintendent of Buildings.  Work orders sometimes accompanied by oral instructions.  Results are reviewed for satisfactory appearance. SUPERVISION: N/A SUPERVISION-OTHER: General supervision to Painter Leader and Painters.


REQUIRED EDUCATION-OTHER: High School Graduation or 3 years experience.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE / COMPETENCIES-OTHER: REQUIRED EXPERIENCES/COMPETENCIES: Seven years of skilled/journeyman-level painter experience, including two years in a supervisory capacity.  Valid Texas drivers license required. OTHER REQUIREMENTS: Skill in applying paints and other finishes with spray machines and in the use of all tools of the painting trade. Proficient in estimating materials and labor requirements. Working conditions are considered acceptable, but involve exposure to outside weather, standing on ladders and scaffolds. Alertness and careful attention is required to avoid injury to self and to others.  Specific job requirements or physical location of positions allocated to this classification render the position security sensitive and thereby subject to the provisions of Section 51.215 Texas Education Code.
