PURPOSE: To perform journey-level skills in the installation, maintenance, remodeling, repair, and servicing of plumbing systems and utilities in a mechanical utility distribution system. Responsible for the prompt performance of assigned plumbing and related duties and mechanical maintenance and repair of utility mains. Frequently responsible for supervision of semi-skilled or unskilled workers.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Install, repair, replace, and maintain water lines, air lines, gas lines, sewer lines, sump pumps, sewer ejectors, domestic water pumps, water heaters, piping, traps, valves, vents, washbowls, sinks, toilet fixtures, fittings, faucets, drains, special laboratory sinks, drain tables, experimental tables, and associated underground utilities. Cut and thread pipe and solder copper pipe. Connect and maintain hot water units and gas heaters, and check for safety. Unstop clogged lines. Must be able to work off of ladders, scaffolding, and tops/roofs of buildings. Perform related duties as assigned by the Plumbing Supervisor, Plumbing Leader, or any other superior. Assist with simple estimates of time and materials required for a job. Pick up materials and supplies from vendors. Assist other Physical Plant shops and University departments. Required to respond to emergency calls and occasionally work nights and weekends. Attends staff meetings as required. Attends safety training or meetings. Attends plant operation and maintenance training courses. Trains personnel on operational and maintenance procedures as required. Inspects construction projects for compliance with applicable plumbing codes as required.
