PURPOSE: To perform journey-level skills in the installation, maintenance, remodeling, repair, and servicing of plumbing systems and utilities in a mechanical utility distribution system. Responsible for the prompt performance of assigned plumbing and related duties and mechanical maintenance and repair of utility mains. Frequently responsible for supervision of semi-skilled or unskilled workers.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Install, repair, replace, and maintain water lines, air lines, gas lines, sewer lines, sump pumps, sewer ejectors, domestic water pumps, water heaters, piping, traps, valves, vents, washbowls, sinks, toilet fixtures, fittings, faucets, drains, special laboratory sinks, drain tables, experimental tables, and associated underground utilities. Cut and thread pipe and solder copper pipe. Connect and maintain hot water units and gas heaters, and check for safety. Unstop clogged lines. Must be able to work off of ladders, scaffolding, and tops/roofs of buildings. Perform related duties as assigned by the Plumbing Supervisor, Plumbing Leader, or any other superior. Assist with simple estimates of time and materials required for a job. Pick up materials and supplies from vendors. Assist other Physical Plant shops and University departments. Required to respond to emergency calls and occasionally work nights and weekends. Attends staff meetings as required. Attends safety training or meetings. Attends plant operation and maintenance training courses. Trains personnel on operational and maintenance procedures as required. Inspects construction projects for compliance with applicable plumbing codes as required.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS: REPORTS TO: General guidance from supervisor or lead person. Work is performed in accordance with standard trade practices and is inspected for conformity to specifications. SUPERVISION: N/A SUPERVISION-OTHER: Detailed instructions to helpers assisting in the work.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE / COMPETENCIES-OTHER: REQUIRED EXPERIENCES/COMPETENCIES: Five years of skilled journeyman-level plumbing. State of Texas Journeyman License required. State of Texas Backflow Prevention Tester Certification required. OTHER REQUIREMENTS: Ability to use acetylene torches, pipe cutters, threaders, wrenches, and other tools common to the plumbing trade. Must be able to read and understand blueprints. Valid Texas Drivers License required. Accuracy in all phases of work performed. Working conditions are considered acceptable, but occasionally involve exposure to one or more disagreeable elements such as dust, dirt, and the need to work in confined spaces. Safety precautions are extremely important around high voltage while working off ladders and scaffolding. Ability to diagnose problems and assign appropriate personnel. Familiar with automated operation and maintenance computer systems. Excellent written and oral communication skills.
