PURPOSE: To provide technical knowledge in the operation and support of safety programs in compliance with regulatory agencies, national guidelines, and institutional policies. Responsible for developing policies and procedures to ensure a safe and healthy working environment.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Supervises inspections of properties and facilities to evaluate health and safety issues. Consults with institutional personnel to solve problems and to interpret and implement regulations, policies and procedures. Oversees response to potentially unsafe conditions such as spills of hazardous materials. Responds to indoor air quality complaints potential overexposures to hazardous materials, fire and/or smoke reports, and other problems. Analyzes results of environmental sampling and equipment testing and calibrating activities to ensure personnel and facility safety. Develops and conducts safety training classes for institutional employees and students, as required. Maintains current knowledge of policies, guidelines and regulations from agencies including, but not limited to, Texas Department of Health, Texas Water Commission, National Institutes of Health, Texas Air Control Board, Joint Commission of Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations, National Fire Protection Association, Occupational Safety and Health Administration, and the Environmental Protection Agency. Performs other Environmental Health and Safety duties as required. Attends seminars and workshops to maintain knowledge of current safety techniques and standards. Develops standard operating procedures and other written guidelines. May occasionally work evenings, weekends, or holiday hours.

REQUIRED EDUCATION-OTHER: Bachelor of Science degree in Applied or Basic Science. Industrial Hygiene, Environmental Science, or other related science.
