PURPOSE: To plan, coordinate, and supervise graphic design production for a wide variety of projects such as catalogs, books, booklets, brochures, flyers, posters, pamphlets, forms and public service advertising. Responsible for all phases of graphic design production, including layout, illustration. calligraphy, typography, printing, photography, binding, engraving, and illustration, and for ensuring that production deadlines are met.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Consults, coordinates, plans and schedules all activities involved in the operation of the print graphics department. Supervises the work of clerical staff in accomplishing varied graphics and typesetting tasks. Advises requesting departments as to print design, layout and illustration on each particular job order. Coordinates the interfacing of personal computer on campus with the automated typesetting system. Keeps abreast of new developments in the field of graphic design and typesetting. Implements new methods to enhance production of the department. Performs other related duties as required.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS: REPORTS TO: General direction from the Director of Campus Printing Service on budgetary matters and certain large projects. SUPERVISION: N/A SUPERVISION-OTHER: Full supervision of Typesetter I, II, and other clerical staff. With authority to hire, terminate and discipline.


REQUIRED EDUCATION-OTHER: Bachelor's degree in commercial art, design, advertising, or equivalent art school training.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE / COMPETENCIES-OTHER: REQUIRED EXPERIENCES/COMPETENCIES: Three years of experience in graphic design production, including one year of experience in each of the following areas: art direction, graphic design including copywriting, photo typesetting and layout, and applied commercial photography or photojournalism and experience in a supervisory capacity. OTHER REQUIREMENTS: Phototypesetting equipment, graphic camera, and personal computer. Accuracy in attention to details. Errors could result in costly re-prints of printed materials in addition to delays in the production of these printed materials. Specific job requirements or physical location of positions allocated to this classification render the position security sensitive and thereby subject to the provisions of Section 51.215 Texas Education Code.
