PURPOSE: To operate and monitor an electronic digital computer and peripheral equipment in routine data processing and computer operations. Responsible for, under close supervision, the control and monitoring of electronic and digital computers on established routines.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Operates computers by responding to console message and handle peripheral equipment such as storage devices, printers, card and tape readers and punches in accordance with operating procedures and program instructions. Observes graphic display units and/or control panels. Places information media into input devices. Removes output. Assists senior operational staff in carrying out various assignments associated with computer operations. May be required to maintain operating records as logs. Performs related duties as required.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS: REPORTS TO: Direct supervision from senior operators and supervisory staff. SUPERVISION: N/A SUPERVISION-OTHER: May assist in supervision and training of part-time student assistants or operator trainees. Performs and in the absence of higher-level operator, may assign emergency duties to other operators in case of fire, flood or other disasters.

REQUIRED EDUCATION: $education

REQUIRED EDUCATION-OTHER: High school graduation.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE / COMPETENCIES-OTHER: REQUIRED EXPERIENCES/COMPETENCIES: Demonstrated ability and/or aptitude, including, six month's experience in computer operations. OTHER REQUIREMENTS: EDP equipment operations (computers, card punch, magnetic tape handlers, printers, etc.). Must be accurate in following established procedures and operational instructions to avoid operator errors. Standard conditions associated with a data processing installation. May be required to work long periods of time and off shifts. Specific job requirements or physical location of some positions allocated to this classification, may render the position security sensitive, and thereby subject to the provisions of Section 51.215 Texas Education Code.
