PURPOSE: To assist the Computer User Services Manager with the activities of personnel who provide user-services assistance in a major computing facility and to advise Computer User Service Specialist, Assistants, and student workers with the consultation to computer users on various skill levels regarding the effective use of computer resources. Responsible for assisting Computer User Service Specialist, Assistants, and student workers with higher level decision-making on client issues and ensure proper routing to other IT departments when resolutions cannot be provided at the user service facility.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Assists in the following processes: hire, train, and supervision of User Services staff. Follows-up on staff projects and tasks and helps formulates group policies and procedures. Consults with users on the use of computer(s) for research or course or research work. Provides solutions in resolving complex computer-related problems. Advises users on the use of effective programming and debugging techniques. Provides advanced computer services (e.g. complex or non-standard tape copying etc.) to academic departments and other groups. Writes and updates user documentation. Investigates, evaluates, tests, and installs third-party software. Provides interface between other department groups and the user community. Performs related duties as assigned. Writes small to medium size programs for testing and evaluation of software, limited usage applications for internal use, or as requested by academic departments.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS: REPORTS TO: Minimal supervision from Manager of User Services because of technical and/or specialized knowledge and/or experience. May consult independently with faculty and students about specific problems or questions. SUPERVISION: N/A SUPERVISION-OTHER: Assists in the hiring and discipline of user services employees. Delegates routine assignments to the Computer User Services Specialist I/II, Computer User Assistants, and Student Assistants. Regularly reviews the work of user services employees to ensure quality standards are maintained.


REQUIRED EDUCATION-OTHER: Bachelor's degree in computer science or a related field.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE / COMPETENCIES-OTHER: REQUIRED EXPERIENCES/COMPETENCIES: Three years of practical work experience in computer-related field. OTHER REQUIREMENTS: Knowledge of and/or experience with a wide variety of computer hardware including mainframe and microcomputer systems. Accuracy is required in application of programming techniques.
