PURPOSE: To coordinate the development, utilization and maintenance of data in accordance with the needs and objectives of the university. Responsible for interpreting the data base structure for users, and for facilitating the efficient operation, usage, and maintenance of the data base and all data base supportive sub-systems.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Participates in all feasibility studies; recommends data course and data interfaces with other systems. Maintains a directory of current data elements and those under development for all computer applications. Controls cataloging of data elements and files to insure integrity. Reviews specifications of future phases and conducts post installation reviews as required. Advises standards pertaining to the Data Base and Data Base Control and Recovery Concepts. Consults with users in regard to special purpose variations to the files and advises as to their value as part of the Data Base. Sets up generalization techniques for information retrieval and a library of retrieval programs which are of recurrent usage. Develops means to approximate inquiry costs and ways to reduce retrieval costs. Initiates an independent test facility which will assure adequate control structures with the new existing systems. May teach formal or informal courses. Performs related duties as required. Assists in maintaining and developing current code directions. Initiates a discussion forum via teaching seminars with speakers drawn from inside and outside the University. Performs various duties in the area of disaster recovery testing and planning.
