PURPOSE: To provide the entry-level technical skills required for the installation and operation of digital network communication equipment. Responsible for installing and maintaining network communication equipment necessary for terminals, workstations, personal computers, and mainframe computers to effectively communicate over a computer network.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Fabrication and installation of network transceiver cables, thinnet trunk line segments, and cabling necessary to connect mainframe communication devices. Configure communication hardware or software parameters in order to insure for effective communication.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS: REPORTS TO: General and specific supervision from Network Support Specialist II, III, and Manager. SUPERVISION: N/A SUPERVISION-OTHER: None.

REQUIRED EDUCATION: $education

REQUIRED EDUCATION-OTHER: One year completed courses towards bachelor's degree in engineering, physic or related field.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE / COMPETENCIES-OTHER: REQUIRED EXPERIENCES/COMPETENCIES: Two years experience repairing mainframe and personal computer equipment, and one year experience installing and maintaining digital networks. OTHER REQUIREMENTS: Knowledge of and/or experience with personal computer network devices, terminal servers, bridges and network boards. Familiarity with specific hardware and software utilized at the University. Extreme accuracy required in all duties performed. Specific job requirements or physical location of some positions allocated to this classification, may render the position security sensitive, and thereby subject to the provisions of Section 51.215 Texas Education Code.
