PURPOSE: To provide the technical experience required to develop and maintain computer system software. Responsible for complex system studies and for designing and developing modifications and enhancements to the operating system and its components.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Analyzes existing and projected operating systems and procedures, including studies of the interaction of several software systems to ascertain feasibility and performance. Coordinates implementation of software systems, and evaluates and modifies existing components of the computer operating system. Participates in studies of projected enhancements in hardware and software and in the development of recommendations to management based upon the results of such studies. Advises software system specialists of lower grade with respect to determination, and possible solutions to, work problems. Performs other related duties as required.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS: REPORTS TO: Work is performed under the broad direction where responsibility for broad planning and the attainment of program objectives is vested in the incumbent. The quality of the program may not be evident immediately and is appraised, therefore, only for initial soundness of theory, logic, and conception. The work of the incumbent is appraised in terms of long-range results. SUPERVISION: N/A SUPERVISION-OTHER: Plans, coordinates, and supervises Software System Specialists of lower grade, making work assignments and reviewing completed work.


REQUIRED EDUCATION-OTHER: Bachelor's degree in an appropriate field.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE / COMPETENCIES-OTHER: REQUIRED EXPERIENCES/COMPETENCIES: Three years of experience in systems programming, with at least two years of experience in software systems programming. OTHER REQUIREMENTS: Exact accuracy is required. Working conditions are considered acceptable, but require working non-standard hours. Specific job requirements or physical location of some positions allocated to this classification, may render the position security sensitive and thereby subject to the provisions of Section 51.215 Texas Education Code.
