Reclassifying a Position
A reclassification of a classified position may be appropriate when the duties have changed sufficiently to require a change of classification. While a reclassification always involves a change in classification, it may not necessarily involve a change in salary. When a salary increase is appropriate due to a job reclassification, department heads / account managers must indicate in writing that their departmental budget can permanently sustain the increased cost of the salary increase. If the position audit determines that a position is classified higher than is warranted by actual duty assignment, the employee occupying such a position may be subject to a salary reduction. When warranted, a reclassification action may be initiated by the Assistant Vice President for Human Resources Management and Development.
Departments requesting a reclassification of an existing position must complete an HRMS document. If the position is vacant, the creator should pull up the position ID to find the position and then click on reclassify. If the position is filled, the creator should find the incumbent in HRMS and then choose the reclassify option.
Reminder, each time a new position is requested; an organizational chart must be submitted showing where the position being audited lies in the department. This may be done by entering the web address in the HRMS document or by faxing a copy to ext. 27288.
Once the Office of Human Resources receives this information, the compensation section will review it. Based on the review, the department may need to additional information.
