The newly formed interdisciplinary Center for African American Studies (CAAS) at the University of Texas at Arlington, spearheaded by the College of Liberal Arts and School of Social Work, invites applications for the position of Director. This is a faculty position and a Ph.D. or other doctoral level degree is required. Academic and professional credentials should include an outstanding record of achievement sufficient for appointment as an associate or full professor with tenure; an interdisciplinary record warranting a joint appointment is preferred. We seek candidates who have a strong record of research and teaching in African American Studies, or in one of the related, interdisciplinary fields.

Experience in academic administration, budget management, personnel management, and strategic planning is expected. Applicants must demonstrate the potential to engage in effective fundraising.

The Director’s duties include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Lead the initial establishment of the CAAS and serve as its first Director.

• Lead policy decisions related to the African American Studies minor, research, community outreach and other programs within the CAAS.

• Lead in resource needs identification and allocation.

• Represent the CAAS on University-wide groups and committees.

• Represent the CAAS in selected Dallas-Fort Worth community organizations and programs.

• Represent the CAAS in national conferences in order to inform faculty about current issues.

• Prepare an annual report of activities of the CAAS.
