The School of Architecture at the University of Texas at Arlington invites applicants to fill two (2) Assistant Professors tenure-track positions as full-time faculty members to begin in the fall of 2012.
The Culture:
As the only school of architecture located within the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex area, the UT Arlington SOA is in a unique position to take advantage of diverse opportunities offered by one of the nation’s leading economic and cultural centers. The school is deeply committed to educating future leaders in the design profession as well as academia. This complex, urban climate offers potential candidates opportunities for professional practice and applied research venues to complement teaching in the classroom.
The School:
The School of Architecture offers degree programs in Architecture (B.S. Arch, M. Arch), Interior Design (B.S. ID) and Landscape Architecture (M.LA). The school’s approximately 500 undergraduate and 150 graduate students enjoy the benefits of a smaller design school while having the support services of a University that enrolls nearly 33,000 students. The varied and constantly expanding regional demographics result in a rich pool of candidates from which to recruit students. The curriculum focuses on solid, fundamental design education in the foundation courses, while offering a variety of focused opportunities for exploration in the upper levels of the curriculum.
Expectations:
Tenure track faculty appointments include full-time teaching responsibilities. Candidates should hold a terminal degree from an accredited institution and demonstrate experience in studio teaching, as the candidate must be able to teach in the school’s undergraduate and graduate design studios. The portfolio should demonstrate studio-teaching excellence at a variety of levels, the potential to conduct scholarly research, and commitment to service. Particular areas of expertise may include: Architectural Design, Drawing (ranging from freehand drawing to computer modeling), Architectural Theory, Teaching Pedagogy, Materiality, Fabrication, Sustainability, and Building Technology. Professional practice with significant built work or an interest in “making” as applied research is encouraged. Professional licensure is required for final tenure consideration.
The Process:
Interested candidates should send 1) a letter of interest including a statement of academic expertise, research interests and scholarly development, 2) a curriculum vitae, and 3) a hard-copy portfolio and an optional digital file of teaching, scholarship, and/or creative and professional work (non returnable). References and additional material will be required at a later point in the review process. Review of applications will begin November 1, 2011 and continue until the positions are filled.
