Health Care Reform Update
Expanded Coverage up to Age 26 for Young Adult Dependents to be Effective September 1, 2011
Beginning on September 1, 2011, the University of Texas System will expand eligibility for dependent children to be carried on a parent’s coverage until they reach the age of 26 as required by the Affordable Care Act (also sometimes referred to as Health Care Reform). While some insurers and employers are offering this expanded eligibility earlier than is required by law, UT System is currently limited by the dependent definitions included in Chapter 1601 of the Texas Insurance Code and must discontinue eligibility for dependent children upon reaching the age of 25.
