Administrative Professional Program

These courses are designed to meet the needs of current Administrative Profesionals as well as those individuals who are just entering the field. The Administrative Professionals Program consists of three levels:

  • Level I Certificate: 12 hours form the required course list Admin
  • Level II Certificate: 18 hours from the required course list
  • Level III Certificate: 24 hours from the required course list
  • Level IV Certificate: 30 hours from the required course list.

Once a candidate has completed the requirements of any level, they will receive a certificate of completion indicating the level of completion as well as the courses include in this level.

*These classes are the basics for all levels of the A&P development program. These classes should be taken first as the foundation for future development.


Course Descriptions:


The Art of Listening: Although most people believe they are good listeners, most people only really listen to a small portion of a conversation. If you have the desire to become a good listener, then this course is for you. Participants will learn the basics of good listening as well as tips for identifying listening style and how to get the most out of a face-to-face conversation.Top

Professionalism in the Workplace: No matter what your title reads, you are an essential element in the success of your organization. In order for you to fulfill the responsibilities of your role, you must be able present yourself and your ideas with a great deal for professionalism. This course is designed to help you identify and develop those needed skills for projecting and maintaining professional work relationships, a winning attitude and confidence in the workplace.Top

Management Leadership Tool Training (Compliance): This face-to-face training is provided by the Office of Institutional Compliance. Although the content of the training focuses more on the manager/leader of the office or department, it is essential that the office Administrative Assistant be familiar with the expectations that are held on their department leader. Our goal is to help partner the Administrative Assistant with their manager/leader for overall office success.Top

Leading My Career Forward: As an employee, it's important to be knowledgeable, engaged and open to learning new skills in order to add value to the university. This course focuses on the employee's career development, including learning new skills for your current job, expanding your current role, increasing your network and using available resources to help guide and support you during the process.Top

Writing Effective Emails: Email has become and essential communication tool for most individuals and organizations. It is essential that you identify and learn all of the basics of email communication as well as all of the dangers of email communication. In this course, participants will learn the keys to effective e-mails as well as proper cyber manners and how to avoid email overload.Top

Dealing With Difficult Employees and People: Never again fall victim to those who love to make life miserable for the rest of us. This training gives you concrete techniques for dealing with difficult people in the workplace and at home. It provides specific strategies for getting adversaries to cooperate...bullies to back off ... wallflowers to open up ... chronic complainers to quiet down. Knowing how to deal with difficult people at work will allow you to approach your job with more enjoyment and your coworkers with greater confidence. Cooperation, collaboration, and compromise will improve - and that makes for a more productive and efficient workplace for everyone. This class is also designed to help supervisors identify and deal with employees that create and stimulate difficult work environments. Participants will be given a variety of information regarding the proper way to discipline as well as alternatives to firing.Top

Managing Stress in the Workplace: Is stress affecting how you function at work or at home? Stress is normal and sometimes even necessary. How you handle stress makes all the difference. Learn what stress is and how to identify and understand it. In addition, discover how to identify your sources of your stress.Top

Conducting Effective Meetings: There are very few people who actually like to sit in meetings. However, meetings are necessary part of team and organizational management. This course is designed to explore the basic keys to conducting effective meeting that will help your team get the right information and then get the job done. Participants will learn how to plan and prepare for meeting and uncover the elements that make a meeting a success. This course also presents insight and tools to virtual meetings.Top

Fundamentals of Supervision/Management: This is a basic course that provides an overview of the essentials skills you will need to function as a supervisors. Participants will learn best practices for communication, coaching, dealing with difficult employees, and performance enhancement.Top

Powerful Presentation Skills: Public speaking may not be the most exciting activity for you, but you can learn the tips and techniques to make your next presentation a great success. Participants will learn how to develop and enhance their public speaking style and create compelling presentations. No matter what the subject, learn how to deliver the message with poise and power. Give your words an appeal that captures attention and leads to inspiration. A presentation delivered with power and passion will be memorable for all who attend.Top

Partnering with your Boss: As an administrative assistant, your success depends upon effectively partnering with your boss. You are often called upon to communicate, plan, organize, negotiate and participate in decision-making at very high levels. This course is specially designed to help you learn goal setting, prioritizing, planning, decision making, relationship building and listening. You will return to work with a better understanding of what partnering with your boss entails and a greater ability to support your organization's goals from your position as a secretary, executive secretary or member of the administrative support staff.Top

Developing Assertive Communication Skills: Do you struggle to find the right words in a conversation? Do you find yourself not being able to get your point across? Now is your opportunity to learn the skills that can empower you to speak clearly and effectively. Participants will learn about communication styles, non-verbal communication, and additional keys to communication that will educate and empower. Learn powerful tools for assertiveness to help you deal with conflict at all levels in the organization and discover techniques on how to be an assertive communicator. You will also explore the differences between being passive, aggressive and assertive. In addition, you will assess your areas of strength and growth in this critical skill.Top

Managing Projetcs & Making Decisions: Today's fast-paced global business environment requires professionals to work with tight deadlines and stringent expectations. This seminar is designed to help you develop strategies to successfully manage projects and effectively make decisions. You will explore the tools for enhancing creativity and brainstorming solutions. Participants are invited to bring an in-depth problem for the class to discuss.Top

Welcoming Diversity: This workshop, offered three times per year, is an experiential, interactive program designed to promote awareness and increased sensitivity to the many similarities and differences among individuals and groups in our society. Done in an upbeat, hopeful tone, the program focuses on developing self-pride, examining stereotypes, and learning skills in responding to prejudicial jokes, remarks, and slurs. Participants will also discover how to be more attentive to diversity and racism in the workplace and community. Please dress in comfortable/causal attire.Top
