University Leadership Seminar Series

Faculty Development

The University Leadership Seminar Series is designed to provide Associate Deans and Department/Program Chairs with professional developmental opportunities related to their leadership roles.  This Spring, participants may choose one of two tracks: Track I (for new Associate Deans and Chairs) or Track II (for experienced Chairs looking to further develop their managerial skills).  Both tracks will emphasize the development of leadership competencies through traditional learning methods and practical experiences.

Here is the information on the Spring 2013 University Leadership Seminar Series:

Track I (New Associate Deans and Chairs):

  • Thursday, January 31, 8:30am-11:30am, Engineering Research Building Room 228:  Understanding Leadership in Higher Education - This module discusses the challenges of leading in Higher Education at the departmental level.  Participants will explore the concepts of leadership vs. management, qualities of effective leaders, academic leader activities, and the perceivably conflicting pressures of transitioning from “scholar” to “chair.”
  • Thursday, February 7, 8:30am-11:30am, Engineering Research Building Room 228: Communication and Conflict Resolution – This module discusses the chair’s critical roles as a listener, interpreter, planner, and mediator when conflict arises.  Participants will discuss effective communication techniques as well as strategies to prevent and resolve conflict in order to build cooperative relationships and achieve departmental and university goals.
  • Monday, April 1, 9:00am-10:00am, Engineering Research Building Room 228: Budgeting (Presented by the Division of Business Affairs) This session will provide participants with a full understanding of the University budget process
  • Thursday, April 4, 8:30am-12:30pm, Engineering Research Building Room 228: Harassment Issues in Higher Education – This module discusses prevention of discrimination and harassment in the workplace.  Participants will explore practical skills for identifying workplace bullying, sexual harassment, and micro-inequities and will review valuable University resources for assistance with harassment related issues. 

 

Track II (Experienced Chairs):

  • Monday, April 1, 9:00am-10:00am, Engineering Research Building Room 228: Budgeting (Presented by the Division of Business Affairs) This session will provide participants with a full understanding of the University budget process
  • Thursday, April 4, 8:30am-12:30pm, Engineering Research Building Room 228: Harassment Issues in Higher Education – This module discusses prevention of discrimination and harassment in the workplace.  Participants will explore practical skills for identifying workplace bullying, sexual harassment, and micro-inequities and will review valuable University resources for assistance with harassment related issues.
  • Thursday, April 18, 8:30am-12:30pm, Engineering Research Building Room 228: Crucial Conversations – Based on the award-winning training program, Crucial Conversations, and the book of the same title, this seminar guides chairs through the steps to mastering crucial conversations to achieve alignment, agreement, and execution.
