The Unit Effectiveness Process (UEP) is the way each unit (academic and non-academic) participates in outcomes assessment. Outcomes assessment is a process by which units practice continuous improvement, studying where they are in relation to their goals, and where they want to be.
All units across campus, academic (i.e. Biology, Music, and History) and non-academic (i.e. Multicultural Affairs, Libraries, and Enterprise Development) units alike, participate in the UEP. Specific duties and responsibilities are listed on the UEP Wheel of Assessment Responsibility.
The goal of the UEP is to promote continuous improvement. Assessment in general and the UEP serve institutional effectiveness through four main purposes:
The UEP is anchored by the University's mission and guided by the priorities established in the strategic plan, Bold Solutions | Global Impact: The Model 21st Century Urban Research University.
Additional information about assessment and the UEP can be found in the UEP Assessment Handbook.
The UEP is an annual, multi-step, multi-element process, which can be described in three phases.
Phase I: Planning
This is the phase when UEP plans are devised and finalized. Units determine which intended outcomes to assess, outline the action steps for achieving the intended outcome, and describe the assessment methodology that will be used to measure the achievement of the outcome.
Phase II: Implementation, Assessment, and Analysis
This is the phase where the action steps designed to achieve the intended outcomes are implemented. Assessment data is collected, analyzed, reviewed, and reported. Proposals for improvement are developed, as indicated by the data.
Phase III: Improvement
This is the phase when proposed changes are implemented and reported. This part of the process completes the planning and evaluation cycle by looking back over the change proposals of the previous cycle(s) and listing improvements that were actually implemented.
UEP reports are housed in Nuventive Improve. For specifics on completing UEP reports, see the UEP Quick Guide to Plan and Results Reporting as well as the UEP Quick Guide to Improvements Reports. IER also offers group training for the UEP and Nuventive Improve as well as small-group or one-on-one consultations to assist you and your unit.
