Printing the Artist's Vision

With new 3-D printing technology, the only limit is your imagination

As part of his MFA in visual communications, graduate student Josh Wilson had to model a preexisting design. He chose a robot, then turned to the MakerBot Replicator 2 printer.

“This testing was to see how to make figures, so I was printing out parts of the robot with tailored joints that fit together” he says. “The striations in the surface come from the layering method the printer uses to construct the model—like a hot glue gun slowly building the foot from the ground up.”
