INTS Student Learning Outcomes

When a student has completed their work as an Interdisciplinary Studies student, one should be able to:

*1. Explain the emergence of interdisciplinary studies as an academic field and contextualize the reasons for its success in the Academy.

*2. Identify the defining elements of interdisciplinarity.

*3. Formulate a complex problem, question, or issue in a way that is appropriate to interdisciplinary inquiry.

*4. Distinguish between how disciplines learn, think, and produce new knowledge and how interdisciplinary studies does this.

*5. Critically evaluate disciplinary peer reviewed insights into problems and identify sources of conflict between them.

*6. Develop and apply integrative thinking skills to solving complex problems.

*7. Produce integrative understandings or solutions to complex problems that are useful, purposeful, meaningful, and comprehensive.

*8. Develop the personal traits and cognitive skills characteristic of interdisciplinarians.

*9. Apply the interdisciplinary research process by writing an interdisciplinary research paper.

*10. Develop effective communication skills. [If written, the communication is structured logically and cited correctly; the language used is clear and effective, errors are minimal, and the style and format are appropriate to the audience. If oral, it is organized effectively, and uses language that is clear, concise, and effective. If technical, the ability to write, search, organize and present data.

*11. Reflect on and articulate your epistemological beliefs as they relate to your ability to learn when addressing a new or difficult problem.

*12. Function as a member of a small research team.
