  • The City of Arlington will soon begin conducting an inventory of greenhouse gas emissions resulting from both government operations (e.g., city vehicle fleet) and private activities (e.g., use of residential furnaces). This process has been prompted by the city’s recent remarkable decision to join Cities for Climate Protection and will likely be a key element of the city’s emerging environmental strategy.
This provides an exciting internship opportunity for UTA grad students (or seniors). The city’s Environmental Services Department, which is conducting the inventory, is actively seeking several energetic UTA student interns to help with key aspects of the research, learn how to use the Cities for Climate Protection inventory software, and assist in running the analysis. The city expects this work to be underway within two weeks and to take until mid-December. The research phase can be conducted primarily from the UTA campus or the students’ own home; the data analysis phase will require the students’ presence in a government office in downtown Arlington. The schedule will be flexible.
These will be voluntary, rather than paid, internships. But they will provide students with a set of cutting-edge research skills, including familiarity with a proprietary software package that is being used in hundreds of cities around the world. I recently met a woman who works for a major environmental consulting firm. Performing exactly this kind of greenhouse gas emissions analysis while she was in grad school helped jumpstart her career.
This internship opportunity is open to grad students (or seniors) in environmental planning, the environmental sciences, environmental engineering, public administration, public affairs, and related fields. If you are interested, please contact me by e-mail as soon as possible.
