Admission Questions

Q:  When are students admitted to the Interdisciplinary Studies (INTS) Program?
ANS:  We have a rolling admission process whereby we accept students throughout the year.
Q:  What grade point average do I need to be accepted into the INTS program if I am already a UTA student?
ANS:  The Interdisciplinary Studies Program requires a 2.25 GPA based on UTA coursework. Transfer students are admitted into the program if they have been admitted to the university.
Q:  Will the grade point average (GPA) I earned at another school count towards my UTA GPA?
ANS:  No. Courses completed at another school transfer, but not the grades earned in those courses. Only UTA courses count towards your UTA GPA.

Program Questions

Q:  What types of degrees does the ints program offer?
ANS:  INTS offers a Bachelors of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies (BAIS) and a Bachelors of Science in Interdisciplinary Studies (BSIS). Your diploma will not include your program title.
Q:  What are my job opportunities with an Interdisciplinary Studies degree?
ANS: Our students are finding it relatively easy to secure the kind of job that they have been preparing for. Employers in the metroplex are telling us that they are looking for graduates who are technically competent, have excellent communication (speech and writing) abilities, can work in a diverse workplace, and who are problem-solvers. The interdisciplinary studies program is dedicated to teaching these core competencies. Click here for narratives from recent INTS alumni.
Q:  What is the difference between the BAIS and the BSIS degrees?
ANS:  The BSIS degree is primarily for those students needing a science oriented degree for their career or future graduate study:
Q:  What are the specific differences between the BSIS degree and the BAIS degree?
ANS: The BSIS degree (in contrast to the BAIS degree) requires:

  • Under General Requirements: 9 hours of math and 11 hours of science-for-science major (s-f-s-m) coursework, 8 hours of which must be in a single lab science
  • The Area of Concentration requires a minimum of 18 hours of science-for-science-major coursework. This coursework may be math, physics, chemistry, biology or geology (or any combination of these), of which 12 hours must be upper (3000-4000) level.
  • There is no language or culture course requirement for the BSIS degree.

Q:  How do I schedule an appointment to talk to an Advisor?
ANS:  Call our office at 817-272-2338 or email us at ints@uta.edu to schedule and Orientation Workshop during which you will meet with an Advisor.
Q:  How do I build my degree plan?
ANS:  You and your Advisor will build a degree plan.
Q:  Can I select courses from across the university curriculum?
ANS:  Yes, but there are exceptions, and your Advisor will inform you of these.
Q:  Can I use all of the hours that I have already earned on my degree plan?
ANS:  Sometimes this is possible depending on what these hours are in and depending on your professional or academic goal. INTS advisors are committed to using as much prior coursework as possible.
Q:  Can I have more than 18-19 hours from one discipline in my Area of Concentration?
ANS:  No more than 18-19 hours in a single discipline can be used on a degree plan outside of the General Requirements.
Q:  How many upper level (3000-4000) courses do I need to have on my entire degree plan?
ANS:  The University requires that you have a minimum of 36 upper level hours overall; 18 of these must be in the Area of Concentration and of these, 12 must be taken at UTA.
Q:  Can I take some of my upper level courses (3000/4000) at a community college?
ANS:  Community colleges only offer 1000 and 2000 level courses.
Q:  How many hours do I need to take to earn a bachelor’s degree in Interdisciplinary Studies?
ANS: For those entering the program in August 2007, 120-122 hours are required for graduation. For those entering the program under earlier catalogs, the hours required are 128-130.
A student entering prior to 2007 can “come forward” in catalog under certain restrictions. Please see your ADVISOR for details.
Q:  How many courses do I need to take at UTA to satisfy the residency requirement?
ANS:  You must COMPLETE a minimum of 32-33 hours at UTA. Of these, 18 hours must be upper level.
Q:  What Interdisciplinary Studies courses are required?
ANS:  There are three (3) required courses which must be taken in sequence: INTS 2301, INTS 4301, and INTS 4391.
