Be a Mentor

Are you the Mentor who will shape the future of UTA?

When you become a mentor in the Maverick Mentors program, you're matched with an incoming freshman for you to mentor in the Fall - Spring academic year.  You're there to answer questions about life at UTA (you know, all those questions you had when you started here)—how to get involved, how to navigate all the campus resources, where to go for a quiet place to study, how to sign up for class, etc.

To be considered as a Maverick Mentors Mentor you must:

  • Have attended UTA for 2 semesters
  • Cumulative 2.75 (or above) GPA
  • Attend a mandatory Mentor Training Session, held in the spring prior to the academic year in which you will be a mentor
  • Turn in all required check-up forms throughout the mentoring process

Expectations of Mentors

  • Contact mentee weekly via any method:  email, phone, text messaging, face-to-face contact, (such as meeting in hallways during class, lunch in UC, social events)
  • Keep commitments to mentee
  • Acquaint your mentee to the UTA life from your perspective
  • Monitor mentee’s progress
  • Assist in the development of skills necessary for mentees to succeed in college
  • Communicate university resources and services to mentee
  • Accompany mentee to program activities, if at all possible, such as mixers and other events
  • Complete check-up forms according to program requirements
  • Maintain confidentiality in your relationship unless there is a serious concern
  • Provide feedback to Maverick Mentors Program coordinators, especially if you are unable to contact your mentee
  • Provide support, guidance, encouragement and information to your mentee

Outstanding Mentor of the Year

Maverick Mentors is only made successful through the dedication of our student mentors and the great relationships they build. Each year, Maverick Mentors thanks our mentors through our Maverick Mentors Mentor of the Year Scholarship available to mentors who have shown qualities of exemplary mentorship. Mentees are asked to nominate their mentors by filling out the nomination form available in the spring semester.  Once a mentor has been nominated we will contact them and request they continue the application process.

Nominations for the 2016-2017 Academic Year

Mentees, show your gratitude by nominating your mentor for the Outstanding Mentor of the Year Award and Scholarship. Nominations will be open in Spring 2018. Mentors cannot be eligible for this scholarship without your nomination.

Past Outstanding Mentor of the Year

2016-2017 HANNAH SLIGAR

"My mentor inspires me and has helped me tap into my potential as an aspiring engineer. She was always there when I needed her. Hannah helped me understand the ins and outs of my major. She helped me to get out more, and helped me not only socially but also academically. I feel like I have gained so much more than a mentor; I gained a friend. We were there just to listen to each other if needed, and sometimes that’s what you need the most in college – someone who listens to you.” - Rachel Weeresinghe, Hannah's Mentee

2015-16 TIFFANY KIM

"She was/is my support, my personal motivator, and my inspiration. I will never be ever to repay her back for the many times that she listened to me when I needed someone to talk to, when she didn't sugar coat any facts or opinions and told it as it was, and for opening many doors for me by providing me with leadership opportunities" - Nadia Khan Mercado, Tiffany's Mentee

2014-2015 ROBERT KALINA

"My mentor helped me a lot when it came to adjusting to the college life. I came in as a Freshman not knowing much and he truly helped me learn a lot. He was truly a life saver and made my college transition so much easier."  - Niveen Joulani, Robert's Mentee

Training

Each Maverick Mentor is required to attend a mandatory training in order to serve as a mentor in the program.

Mentor online applications are open in the spring.  They are now closed for the 2017-2018 academic year.

Your mentoring relationship is a two way street, so make sure you are committed to being responsive with your mentor and attending the regular events offered by the Maverick Mentors program that help you stay connected. As a mentee remember to:

  • Set goals you would like your mentor to help you accomplish
  • Use your mentor as a resource, remember they joined the program because they want to help you
  • Be open and share how you are feeling with your mentor
  • Consider the advice your mentor gives you
  • Contact Maverick Mentors if your mentor is unresponsive

Our Matching Process: Mix & Match

Our Mix & Match event is a very important event for all mentees and mentors to attend. Through networking games and opportunities, you will have the chance to tell us who you would like to have as a mentor. We can't guarantee that you will be matched with your first choice mentor but this matching process will help you to have a strong input on your matching. Mentees who do not attend the Mix & Match event will be paired to the best ability by Maverick Mentors staff based on certain interests and commonalities from the application answers you provide.

Maverick Mentors Mix & Match

All mentors and mentees are required to attend the Maverick Mentors Mix & Match event. During this event, participants have the opportunity to meet people with similar majors and interests though planned activities. At the end of the event, participants will submit a request for the mentor or mentee they choose to be matched with.
