The College of Liberal Arts’ 410 professorial faculty, 56 staff and 82 student employees serve more than 4,400 students enrolled in 25 undergraduate and 22 graduate programs.

National accreditation of two departments: the Department of Art & Art History through the National Association of Schools of Art & Design and the Department of Music through the National Association of Schools of Music.

Retention

of first-time undergraduates in Fall 2008: 64.4% (for university = 60.7%)

Faculty Achievements in Research and Creative Activity

Faculty awards for research and creative activity include: a Guggenheim Fellowship, 2 Pulitzer Prize nominations, La Cruz Andina de Oro [Andean Golden Cross] from the Bolivian Government and multiple  awards from the Fulbright Foundation, the National Endowment for the Humanities, the National Science Foundation, and the National Endowment for the Arts as well as the the National Academy of Education, the Mellon, Ford and Russell Sage Foundations, the American Council of Learned Societies, the American Academy in Rome and many other institutions. Faculty members have discovered new languages. They have received national awards for outstanding advising. They include elected members of the Texas Institute of Letters, the Société de l’histoire de l’art français (Louvre Museum, Paris, France), and the Fondazione “Il Correggio” (Correggio, Italy).

Work by art faculty is in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the National Museum of American Art, Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C.; the Whitney Museum of American Art; the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; the Fogg Museum, Harvard University; the Library of Congress, Washington, D.C.; the Royal Museum of Fine Art, Antwerp, Belgium. A Professor of Art was named Texas State Artist in 3-dimensional media by the Texas Commission on the Arts in 2007.


Examples of Outstanding Alumni

Tom Fox (B.F.A. - photography, Art & Art History, 1991), Michael Ainsworth (B.A. Communication - Journalism, 1991) and Brad Loper (B.A. Communication - Journalism, 1993): three of an eight-member team from the Dallas Morning News that won the 2006 Pulitzer Prize for Breaking News Photography for coverage of Hurricane Katrina.   

Waded Cruzado-Salas (1984 M.A. Spanish, 1990 Ph.D. Humanities) is interim president of New Mexico State University, where she previously was dean of the College of Arts & Sciences and executive vice president and provost.

Lou Diamond Phillips (B.F.A. 1985, theatre arts), star of the films “La Bamba” and “Stand and Deliver”.

Jane Beitler (1979 B.A., English; 1981 M.A., English) manages science communications for the National Snow and Ice Data Center at the University of Colorado at Boulder. She edits and writes an annual collection of science feature articles for NASA.

Ann Wynia (1965 B.A., Political Science), currently president of North Hennepin Community College, was elected to serve the Minnesota House of Representatives from 1977-1989.

Jim McClellan (1968 B.A. Political Science, 1970 M.A. History) is dean of Humanities and Social Sciences at the Alexandria Campus of Northern Virginia Community College. He is in his seventh term as commissioner of human rights for the city of Alexandria, VA. 

Dallas Taylor (2003 B.M., Music Media) sound design and post audio mixer for The Discovery Networks (Discovery Channel, TLC, Animal Planet, etc.). Previously he worked in Los Angeles for NBC, Fox, Fox Sports Net, and G4.
