Carmen Goldthwaite is a 7th generation Texan who writes and tells the stories about the Texas she loves for western lore magazines. Fascinated by the distaff roles in Texas, she's written Texas women's stories for anthologies, such as The Way West in 2005 and Wild Women of the Old West, a 2003 anthology. Her newest book is Texas Dames: Sassy and Savvy Women Throughout Lone Star History, published in 2012.

Bill Neal practiced criminal law in West Texas for twenty years as a prosecutor and twenty as a defense attorney, then turned to writing. His latest book, Vengeance Is Mine: The Scandalous Love Triangle That Triggered The Boyce-Sneed Feud, examines a one-hundred year old feud that the families would not discuss until very recently. Neal's book tells "a story of the written laws of Texas struggling to gain ascendency over justice administered by Judge Winchester and Judge Lynch, as well as by the self-help justice condoned by the Honor Code’s unwritten laws."

March 22, 2013 - Alan Lowe - Director of the George W. Bush Presidential Library and Museum

Alan C. Lowe In 1989, he joined the staff of the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, California as an archivist. In 1992, he moved to the Office of Presidential Libraries at the National Archives in Washington, D.C., where he helped to oversee the Presidential libraries located throughout the nation. Lowe will speak about his career with the National Archives and the role of the Presidential libraries, and give in depth information on the mission of and plans for the George W. Bush Library. The Bush Library will move to the new facility at Southern Methodist University with a scheduled dedication date in early 2013. Lowe will discuss that facility and the many resources and programs the Library will provide.

Fritos Pie

 

February 15, 2013 - Kaleta Doolin, author of the book Fritos Pie

Kaleta Doolin grew up in Dallas, the daughter of Charles Elmer Doolin, the founder of the Frito Company. The Frito company was one of the first firms to utilize point-of-sale advertising, and developed dozens of recipes intended to get American homemakers “Cooking with Fritos.”  Doolin shows that many of the vintage recipes developed by her grandmother, her father, and company employees became integral to the company’s marketing success. She draws upon hours of interviews with her mother, siblings, cousins, and many of her father's closest business associates as well as focused research in Frito-Lay corporate archives and other collections.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Arsenal of Defense: Fort Worth's Military Legacy

 

January 25, 2013 - J'Nell Pate - Arsenal of Defense: Fort Worth's Military Legacy

The military history of Fort Worth, from the founding settlement of 1849, through the world war years of military training, to the home of modern day military industrial defense contractors. J'Nell L. Pate is retired from Tarrant County College in Fort Worth, where she taught history and government. She is the author of nine other books. The Paper Republic by James Bevill

 

September 28 - 2012 - James Bevill - The Paper Republic

To truly understand the struggle for Texas independence one must unravel a trail of financial matters including the political participation of kings, dictators, crooked politicians, and the role of counterfeiters. James Bevill explores these topics and takes a look at numismatics and the history of each coin and piece of currency used in the old Republic. Bevill has won numerous awards for his work in numismatics and has written several articles on Confederate coins, Republic of Texas money and the role it played in the early history of Texas.

Brenda McClurkin and Jonelle Ryan Bartoli will discuss their new book Weatherford: The Early Years. This is part of the Arcadia Publishing series "Images of America." The book chronicles the history of Weatherford from 1856 to 1939, using photographs from the Weatherford Public Library, Weatherford College Library, Doss Heritage & Culture Center, the UT Arlington Library Special Collections, Texas Pythian Home, and Historic Fort Worth, Inc.

Counting My Blessings by Elzie Odom

 

November 16, 2012 - Elzie Odom - Counting My Blessings

7:30pm, Central Library sixth floor parlor

Former mayor of Arlington, Texas, Elzie D. Odom's personal story reveals roots in a rural community in Southeast Texas, where the family slave narrative tells of his great great great grandfather Jim Shankle's escape from slavery in Mississippi and trek to Texas to join his wife and her three children. Elzie Odom was born in Shankleville in 1929, and in a career that included holding elective office in the 1960s in Orange, TX, becoming a Postal Inspector, then his move to Arlington and serving first as councilman, then as mayor. There have been many "firsts" in Mayor Odom's life, as he will discuss at the Friends meeting.

Texas Tradition Chorus performs for the Friends of the Library
