Spring 2005: UT Arlington students vote on and pass the Student Life Initiative - a two-part referendum to pay for the renovation and expansion of the current Activities Building and the operation of a special events center.
Fall 2005: President James D. Spaniolo appoints an Ad Hoc committee to oversee project.
November 2005: Architectural firms submit proposals and are interviewed. PageSoutherlandPage (PSP) is selected. PSP will work with Hughes Group Architects in the design phases of the Activities Building.
November 2005 - February 2006: Numerous focus groups are conducted with students, faculty and staff to identify issues with the current facilities, user interests and desired facility outcomes.
March 2006: UT Arlington selects one of four designs presented. The design presented includes 80,000+ square feet of new facility and over 119,000 square feet of space to be renovated.
March 2006 - July 2006: PSP, the Office of Facilities Planning and Construction (UT System - OFPC), and UT Arlington work to complete the 100% Design Document.
May 2006: Hunt Construction is hired as the Contractor at Risk for the Activities Building project. Hunt Construction begins working with PSP, OFPC, and UT Arlington on the Construction Documents.
August 2006: Campus Recreation conducts a focus group to examine a name for the recreation facility being designed and constructed. Student, faculty and staff select the name Maverick Activities Center (MAC).
October 2006: An official groundbreaking ceremony is planned on the north side of the existing Activities Building. The MAC will be officially "underway" at 4 p.m. on October 10th and Hunt construction will begin the 11 month process of building the 80,000+ square feet of new facility.
October 2006 - September 2007: Work on Phase I continues. This phase includes the fitness center, basketball/volleyball courts, computer café, social zone, multi-purpose rooms, 1/9 mile indoor track and the locker rooms.
September 2007: Ribbon cutting for the completion of Phase I. The University community will begin utilizing this exciting new campus life enhancement.
September 2007 - March 2008: Work on Phase II continues. This phase include the renovation of an indoor soccer gym, additional multi-purpose rooms, a 1/16 mile indoor track, racquetball courts, a game room, rock climbing wall, outdoor basketball courts and sand volleyball courts.
March 2008: Grand Opening of completed project. Over 200,000 square feet of state-of-the-art recreation facilities are available to the UT Arlington community. It is estimated that over 75% of the student population will take advantage of these facilities on a weekly basis.
Beyond March 2008: Additional recreation facilities will be considered including aquatics facilities and an increase in the number of current facilities needed to accommodate the UT Arlington campus.
