Areas of Expertise: Plasma and liquid propellant rocket propulsion, hypersonic air-breathing propulsion, fuel injection, combustion, turbulence, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation and modeling of high-speed reacting flows.
Background: Dr. Musielak, Associate Fellow of AIAA, has an extensive career working in the aerospace industry and in academia. Her research interests include liquid rockets and hypersonic air-breathing propulsion, including fuel injection and CFD simulation of scramjet flows. Dr. Musielak directed numerous R&D projects in industry and academia, playing leadership roles and working under government contracts including NASA and the U.S. Army Missile Defense. In her last position she was Manager of Advanced Technology R&D, and prior to that she was Chief Scientist, overseeing a hypersonics research program sponsored by the U.S. Army.
Dr. Musielak is the recipient of two NASA Research Fellowships and in 2005 was elected Associate Fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA), where she now chairs the Communications subcommittee of the High Speed Air Breathing Propulsion Technical Committee.
During her first tenure (1994-2000) in the MAE Department, Dr. Musielak established a research program in hypersonics and pulse detonation propulsion, and also taught graduate and undergraduate courses in thermal sciences and propulsion. In the past several years, she has developed, organized, and taught several professional development courses in pulse detonation propulsion for AIAA. Dr. Musielak has been invited to lecture in Mexico, Panama, Italy, Spain, and in England. She has authored over hundred technical reports and articles and presented research at national and international conferences. Dr. Musielak has written two books.
