Background: Dr. Fernandez joined UTA’s Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering faculty following a continuous 25-year career in engineering practice with the General Motors Corporation and The University of Texas at Arlington. His early employment began as a part-time computer programmer at Virginia Tech’s Communication Network Services for four years, followed by five years at GM in product engineering, manufacturing, and engine drive test & field vehicle instrumentation.
At UTA, Dr. Fernandez joined the research staff at the Automation & Robotics Research Institute (now UTARI) and TMAC, where he became Program Manager for Process & Design Engineering. He had progressive responsibilities in the acquisition and execution of government- and industry-funded R&D contracts in automated manufacturing and product design. His PI track record is in excess of $3 million, with major extramural funding in photovoltaic manufacturing (BP Solar, Spire Solar) and surgical device development (Johnson & Johnson).
Dr. Fernandez brings direct experience to the classroom in product development, IP licensing and commercialization, factory automation, and mechatronics—the multidisciplinary integration of mechanisms, electronics, software, and CAE tools for advanced product design. He has conducted advanced graduate work in robotics, high-ordered compressible fluid modeling and helium fluid power systems, and teaches courses in senior design capstone, engineering graphics, controls, differential equations and manufacturing. He’s author/co-author of 11 journal articles, one book chapter, about 40 conference proceedings and medical journal abstracts, two issued patents and several pending national and international patents.
