Areas of Expertise: Stress and vibration analysis, structural analysis, structural dynamics, finite element methods, and computer aided engineering.
Background: Professor Lawrence has had industrial experience in the design and development of computer based and analytical methods for the static and dynamic response of engineering systems, particularly in the structures area. He spent nine summers as an engineer or consultant in the dynamics group at Bell Helicopter/Textron. He also has worked under contract to the Air Force Weapons Laboratory, Kirkland AFB, on the development of digital computer simulation methods for airborne pointing and tracking systems. In addition, he has had experience in the analysis of elastomeric bearings and helicopter rotor systems. Recently Prof Lawrence has been involved with the development of closed-form finite element formulations, algorithms for finite element analysis error estimation, and adaptive mesh refinement for both two and three dimensional applications as well as the implementation of web-based engineering problem solutions.
