Luca Maddalena, Ph.D.
Assistant Professor
Education:
-
PhD. Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, 2007
-
Laurea. Politecnico di Milano, 2004
Area of Expertise: Hypersonic air-breathing propulsion; Injection, mixing and combustion in high-speed flows; Vortex dynamics; Experimental fluid dynamics; Instrumentation; Advanced propulsion configurations.
Background: Dr. Maddalena received his Laurea degree in aerospace engineering from Politecnico di Milano in Italy and a Ph.D. in aerospace engineering from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. Prior to joining the UTA Faculty, he was a Postdoctoral Scholar at the Graduate Aeronautical Laboratories of the California Institute of Technology (GALCIT).
At Virginia Tech, he conducted experimental studies on dispersion and mixing of jets in supersonic cross-flows, and research on the characterization of complex injectors for high-speed propulsion applications. He also explored the effects of external axial vortices, which can typically be found in scramjet combustors, on the basic jet flow development.
His postdoctoral research at Caltech, funded by the Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR), was focused on fundamental investigations of mixing and combustion in turbulent, subsonic and supersonic flows, and their application to hypersonic air-breathing propulsion.
Dr. Maddalena contributed to the design of several experimental facilities and his experience includes diagnostics and instrumentation development.
His research and teaching interests are in the area of experimental gasdynamics. His research group is focused on injection, mixing and combustion in high-speed flows, flow control, and propulsion.
Dr. Maddalena is a member of AIAA and is also serving as a reviewer for various technical journals.
