Professor
Education: Ph.D. University of Minnesota, 1990 ~ M.S. University of Minnesota, 1986 ~ B.S. Seoul National University, Korea, 1982
Areas of Expertise: Convective heat transfer and fluid flow, nucleate boiling heat transfer, enhancement of phase change heat transfer, thermal management of high-heat-flux microelectronics, and heat transfer in heat exchanges.
Background: S. M. You is a Professor in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at the University of Texas at Arlington. He received his B.S.M.E. degree (1982) from Seoul National University, Korea; and his M.S.M.E. (1986) and Ph.D. (1990) degrees from the University of Minnesota. He then joined the faculty at The University of Texas at Arlington, where he has established the Micro-scale Heat Transfer Laboratory, which is equipped with various phase-change heat transfer test facilities. Dr. You has developed an experimental method to investigate nucleate boiling heat transfer mechanisms by measuring boiling bubble frequency, size, and velocity using image processing. Above all, he suggested nanoporous structures for CHF enhancement and also invented a novel microporous boiling heat transfer enhancement coating which modifies the microstructure of heater surfaces resulting in a significant nucleate boiling heat transfer improvement. Dr. You is the author or co-author of numerous publications and he is a Fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.
