"Perturbation Bounds for Matrix Eigenvalues"

Abstract: The talk will provide a survey of inequalities for the distance between the eigenvalues of two n-by-n matrices A and B in terms of the distance ||A-B||. The matrices A and B could be special - Hermitian, unitary, normal; and the distance can be defined in several different ways.

Brief Bio: Prof. Bhatia, a fellow of Indian National Science Academy and Indian Academy of Sciences, received his PhD in 1980 from Indian Statistical Institute. He has published numerous influential papers in matrix analysis, operator theory, and Fourier series and four books one of which is being reprinted by SIAM in the series Classics in Applied Mathematics. Prof. Bhatia has earned many awards and honors, including Fulbright Scholar (UC Berkeley, 1979-80), Indian National Science Academy Medal for Young Scientists (1982), Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology (1995), Winegard Visiting Professor (University of Guelph, Canada, 1999), among others.
