Algebra Seminar

Friday (11/05/2004) at 4:00pm in 302 Pickard Hall "Moving Beyond Groups: Rings & Modules, Fields & Vector Spaces"Abstract: This informal talk will be geared toward undergraduates interested in pursuing higher level algebra. As a consequence, we will assume from the audience only an understanding of basic group theory. By adding additional structure to the already familiar group, we will show how to form a ring, and also discuss the concept of a module over a given ring, the special case being a vector space over a field. Several examples will be given, and questions will be encouraged. Time permitting, we will show how these concepts are used in our areas of research.
