"Quasi-guided modes and resonance in periodic structures"

Abstract: This will be a discussion of guided electromagnetic waves in periodic material sheets or slabs. Periodic variations in a slab provide a means of precision guiding and control of EM waves. The periodicity can also cause the energy of modes to leak and greatly enhance or prohibit transmission of incident energy through the slab in narrow frequency regions. We provide a mathematical description of guided and quasi-guided modes and explain the phenomenon of transmission anomalies for a class of photonic crystal slabs.
