GK-12 Program
The Department of Mathematics has received a five-year $2.8 million NSF grant to award GK-12 fellowships to qualified students. Recipients of these fellowships will receive a stipend of $30,000 per year and up to $10,500 in education costs toward tuition, fees, books, and insurance. The main objectives of the GK-12 program in the Department of Mathematics at the University of Texas at Arlington are to (1) enhance GK-12 fellows' professional development, particularly their communication, collaboration, and leadership skills, and (2) to improve mathematics education in the Arlington Independent School District by developing a seamless learning pathway for bringing research-level mathematics to the K-12 setting.
Eligibility
In order to be considered for the GK-12 Fellowship, candidates must be
- U.S. citizens or permanent residents
- M.S. or Ph.D. students who have begun thesis research in mathematics (students in mathematics education are not eligible)
Strong preference will be given to candidates with prior teaching experience.
Responsibilities
Recipients of GK-12 fellowships must
- Commit to spending 10 hours per week in a middle or high school classroom in partnership with Arlington school district teachers during the academic year
- Commit to an additional 5 hours per week for preparation and development of school activities
- Participate fully in the GK-12 Summer Institute
- Develop and implement original learning modules based on research questions currently under investigation
- Participate in weekly GK-12 seminar and all other required GK-12 activities
