a joint venture of   UNT,   UTA   and   TCU

Speaker: Dr. Frank Sottile, Professor,  Texas A&M University

"A Murnaghan-Nakayama Formula in Quantum Schubert Calculus"

Abstract:
The Murnaghan-Nakayama rule expresses the product of a Schur function with a Newton power sum in the basis of Schur functions. As the power sums generate the algebra of symmetric functions, the Murnaghan-Nakayama rule is as fundamental as the Pieri rule. Interesting, the resulting formulas from the Murnaghan-Nakayama rule are significantly more compact than those from the Pieri formula. In geometry, a Murnaghan-Nakayama formula computes the intersection of Schubert cycles with tautological classes coming from the Chern character.

In this talk, I will discuss some background, and then some recent work establishing Murnaghan-Nakayama rules for Schubert polynomials and for quantum Schubert polynomials. This is joint work with Morrison, Benedetti, Bergeron, Colmenarejo, and Saliola.

DIRECTIONS TO UTA AND PARKING INFORMATION

An interactive map of UTA may be found at http://www.uta.edu/maps/?panel=parking , which gives both buildings and parking lots (use the menu on the left of the map). Note that PKH is Pickard Hall and is on South Nedderman Drive.

If you think you will be able to come to the talk, and if you think you'll be wanting to park on campus, you could either try to park at a meter (a few next to Pickard Hall on West St and some on Nedderman Dr, West of Cooper St) or in free visitor parking (some available at Davis Hall - 5-min walk from Pickard Hall) or in the parking garage next to Pickard Hall (costs money) or in the college park district ( see https://www.uta.edu/collegeparkdistrict/parking/ - their southmost lot ) where the parking is free (but check the signs), but is approx 5-min walk from Pickard Hall.

Also, some changes in recent years:

  • Nedderman Dr to/from Planetarium Place from/to Cooper St is now closed to all traffic, and

  • the lot that used to be a student lot (between West St and Oak St) is now a faculty lot, and

  • the lot that used to be a faculty lot between West St and Cooper St is closed, and

  • there is handicapped parking in front of Pickard Hall with access from West St, and

  • note that West St (one-way) is accessible from Mitchell St only.

Since there is construction in downtown Arlington, the current recommended route from UNT is: get to I30 heading East, & follow directions from TCU given below. From TCU: east on I30, exit Cooper, South on Cooper, left (East) on W. Mitchell or right (West) on Nedderman, then use map.
