The University of Texas at Arlington MCC

Bachelor of Social Work:

Overview and Program Requirements | Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) | Schedule of Classes

Q: How do the American Sign Language classes at MCC fit with the BSW foreign language requirement?

A: The BSW degree plan requires that a total of 14 credit hours be dedicated to foreign language. A minimum of 11 hours must be dedicated to the language itself, while the last three hours can be either a foreign language class (Spanish IV, for example) or a "cultural elective" as shown on the degree plan.
To fulfill the foreign language requirements, students who take ASL classes will need to take the first four classes. The first three classes add up to 10 credit hours, leaving the student 1 hour short of the 11 hour minimum, thus necessitating the fourth class. Classes such as deaf culture will not fulfill the language requirement in that at least 11 hours must be dedicated to learning the language itself.

Q: Will the Liberal Arts math class offered at MCC suffice for the Algebra requirement at UTA?

A: No. Even though students may use Liberal Arts math to fulfill core requirements at MCC, the class does not transfer to a four year school. Therefore, Algebra (recommended) or another math class will need to be taken to fulfill the core requirements at UTA.

Q: Are there plans to offer a greater variety of social work classes at MCC for students who would like to move through the process more rapidly?

A: Not at this time. As the program begins, only one social work class is being scheduled per semester. However, both MCC and UTA are likely to respond to higher demand for classes. We support (and will assist where possible) the organizing and/or petitioning by students for increased class availability. Students also have the option to take classes in Arlington if they choose.

Q: Can we get financial aid for classes at UTA through MCC?

A: No. Financial aid must be sought through the school at which you'll be taking the classes.

Q: How do students find out about the order in which social work courses are to be taken?

A: Students can look on the UTA website for the class prerequisite list by going to the BSW site index and looking under "prerequisites."

Q: What is the easiest way to communicate with BSW program staff?

Q: What are my options in regard to fulfilling the science requirements in the BSW degree plan? A: The BSW degree plan requires a total of 11 hours of Biology. The first eight hours consist of six hours of lecture and two hours of lab. The last three hours are to be filled with a biology elective.
If a student is core complete at MCC by September 1, 2002 they will have completed two lab science courses, which will fulfill the first eight hours on the BSW degree plan. If the student is core complete by 9/1/02, any eight hours of lab science classes will fulfill the requirement. In this case, the student will still need a biology elective which should be fulfilled with BIOL 1301.
If the student is not core complete by 9/1/02 the first eight hours of the science requirement must consist of either Biology or Anatomy & Physiology lab classes and the elective can be any Biology class.
