For the third straight year, we are holding Metroplex Day which is a joint collaboration among The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, The University of Texas at Arlington, and The University of Texas at Dallas. The goal of this one-day event is to highlight the great science that is being conducted at the three UT-Institutions in North Texas, as well as to facilitate future collaborations. It is designed to create a greater awareness of interdisciplinary biomedical - related (broadly defined) research, as well as to promote even greater collaborations among scientists. The goal is to stimulate thoughts about scientific opportunities where the biobehavioral and physical sciences overlap. Last year, there were approximately 450 faculty, post-doctoral and graduate students who attended. This Academic Year, it is being held on Friday, March 6, 2009 at The University of Texas at Arlington. The events of the day are open to all faculty, students, scientific staff, and trainees at DFW colleges and universities.
Again, the Presidents of each Institution will be present –Craig Malloy (representing Daniel Padolsky President at UT Southwestern), James Spaniolo (UT Arlington), and David Daniel (UT Dallas). Also, the Keynote Lecture will be presented by Dr. George Georgiou, the Cockrell Family Regent’s Chair in Engineering, The University of Texas at Austin. As noted by Dr. Georgiou:
“Our group employs molecular biology and genetic approaches for the design and production of proteins with improved function and for the engineering of cellular physiology. Current research projects include: Development of new technologies
to aid protein engineering and drug discovery; Engineering of therapeutic and diagnostic antibodies; Engineering of novel enzymes; The mechanisms of oxidative protein folding in bacteria; Protein secretion pathways in bacteria; Regulation of RNA turnover; Biologically templated nanomaterials.”
Registration is free, but required, because we need accurate headcounts to order refreshments and lunches. Lunch and parking will be free. Please register/submit poster title at our website http://www.uta.edu/metroplexdays/ by Feb. 27th.
Registrants are encouraged to present (4' x 4' max) posters on the following topics (there will be a $200 prize awarded for each of the best 3 posters):
• Biobehavioral Factors in Physical and Mental Health Disorders
• Bioengineering
• Bioimaging
• Biomaterials and Tissue
• Biotechnology
• Genomics, Computational Biology and Bioinformatics
• Nanomedicine and Drug Delivery
• Psychoneuroimmunology
• Robotics and Medical Electronics Bioimaging
We greatly encourage your participation in these events!
This year, we have enough space to accommodate all submitted posters.
