Stories to Our Children

Date: May 2 , 2015
Event date: 05-02-2015

Five students of Spanish are assisting the Arlington Public Library with a program called Stories to Our Children. This program is based on the conviction that the sharing of stories between parents and their children creates a lasting bond between the generations, and promotes an invaluable appreciation and commitment to literacy. Through this program, underserved mothers and fathers are empowered to write, refine, and illustrate their life stories for their children. The Stories to our Children team, with the assistance of its Latino Outreach Assistants, provides support to its story-tellers, in the form of coaching, editing and proof-reading. The family books are subsequently published and catalogued in the library. By being published in the library, families gain a sense of ownership of the library, and a strong connection to the idea that story traditions, education and literacy are treasures to be preserved and honored by generations. Latino Outreach Assistants from Modern Languages provide language support to the library staff, and the families participating in the program, as well as help liaising with service learning Spanish courses at UTA that will be providing more editorial support to the program. These five students are also assisting in the organization of El día de los niños, an event organized by the Arlington Public Library and Modern Languages to celebrate childhood and literacy for the entire family. The event will take place on Saturday, May 2, 2-4pm, at the MAC Center.
