Dr. Amy Austin invited to the University of Colorado

Date: June 2 , 2015

Dr. Amy Austin was invited by the Department of Spanish and Portuguese at the University of Colorado to give a campus-wide lecture "Reading Translatio Studii from Ramon Llull's Llibre del gentil (1274-1276)." She examined how Llull’s Llibre del gentil e dels tres saves informs modern theories of translatio through the promotion of interfaith dialogue and pushes the limits of modern religious, linguistic, cultural, and geographical contact.  This talk formed part of a year-long series on Translation in Medieval Iberia.  Dr. Austin's student, Robert Phillips won the Graduate Dean's Award at the ACES conference for his presentation "Bodies and Souls: The Sociopolitical Mechanism of Religious Conversion and Its Representation in the Medieval Spanish Manuscript the Cantigas de Santa María."  His presentation analyzed the visual depiction of the converted Jew in Alfonso X's thirteenth-century work Las cantigas de Santa María, showing how the converted body becomes a stage for racial and religious manipulation.
