Portugese Language

Welcome to the Portuguese section!

Portuguese is the 3rd most spoken European language in the world! It’s an easy (Latin-based) language! The Portuguese speaking people have a nice and friendly culture! Portuguese is a beautiful language, which sounds like a mixture of French, Italian, and Spanish.

The Portuguese Program at The University of Texas at Arlington is dedicated to the study of the language, literature, culture, and business environments of Portuguese-speaking Countries. Students have the opportunity to progress toward oral and written linguistic competence in Portuguese and to study Portuguese communication within its cultural context.

Courses are designed to increase self-expression, cross-cultural understanding, and develop the technical skills necessary to function in an internationalized economic, political, and web-based world.

Course offerings reflect a conscious effort to accommodate the needs of both non-native and heritage speakers, and to provide a comprehensive study of the language within its cultural traditions for greater international understanding.

Who should learn Portuguese?

Pre-Health, Pre-law, Science & Engineering Majors will expand their unique ‘leading edge’, and stand out from the crowd by taking Portuguese classes.

Portuguese is 1 of the 5 critical languages. It is relevant to students interested in Anthropology, Business, Brazilian Culture, Diplomacy, History, International Relations, Language, Literature, Web Localization, and Translation.

Students interested in the cultures of the Portuguese-speaking Countries should check out the Portuguese Club, which meets regularly.

In addition, check out UT Arlington’s Study Abroad opportunities, scholarships, and other programs supported by the Charles T. McDowell Center for Critical Languages and Area Studies.
